Astrology is a tradition that interprets the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets through symbols associated with personality and life experiences. If you are new to it, start with your Sun sign, then learn how your Moon sign, rising sign, and birth chart fit together.

This guide explains the basics of Western tropical astrology. You do not need to memorize every symbol to begin: understanding the difference between a sign, a planet, and a house will make most beginner explanations much easier to follow.

What is the zodiac?

In astrology, the zodiac is a circle divided into twelve signs, each covering 30 degrees. The tropical zodiac begins with Aries at the March equinox. Its signs are not the same thing as the astronomical constellations, which occupy unequal areas of the sky. Sidereal astrology uses a different reference point, so a person’s sign can differ between systems. Astrodienst explains the distinction between signs and constellations.

When someone asks, “What is your sign?” they usually mean your Sun sign: the zodiac sign occupied by the Sun when you were born.

The 12 zodiac signs, elements, and modalities

Each sign belongs to one of four elements and one of three modalities. These are traditional astrological categories, not scientific personality classifications. Select a sign below to read its daily horoscope.

What do the four elements mean?

In astrological symbolism, fire emphasizes enthusiasm and action; earth, practicality and tangible results; air, ideas and communication; and water, emotions and intuition. A birth chart can contain placements across all four elements, regardless of its Sun sign. See Astrodienst’s explanation of the elements.

What does cardinal, fixed, or mutable mean?

Modalities describe a symbolic approach to change. Cardinal signs are associated with starting; fixed signs with sustaining; and mutable signs with adapting. For example, Aries and Leo are both fire signs, but Aries is cardinal and Leo is fixed. These categories describe an interpretive framework, not a rule about how someone must behave. What is the difference between Sun, Moon, and rising signs?

Your Sun, Moon, and rising signs describe different parts of an astrological chart. They can be three different signs; knowing only your Sun sign does not tell you the other two.
