So instead of dropping everything to help a friend in a romantic crisis, set aside a chunk of your free time to do some volunteer work that will help many people. And while you're at it, write a (slightly) painfully large check to your favorite charity. Spread your philanthropic urges wide. (Your friend will be just fine without your help.)
